readreceipt is one of the most playful tracks on the album, and also perhaps one of the most lyrically imaginative. Driven by a layered, displaced drum pattern in 3 against an angular, suspended ostinato in 7, the song quickly works its way into a hypnotizing groove. The primary lyric – “I know you know,” sung by Dickson above the fray – is displaced throughout the song, meant to reflect the maddening experience of waiting for someone to respond to a message when you believe they have seen it. It’s a feeling, Elodia shares, that is made “all the more pronounced if their read receipts are turned on and you can verify that they have definitely received your message!” This sense of impatience is evoked in the “double check” refrain that interrupts the proceedings throughout the song, describing the experience of continually checking your device for a response, against your better judgment.
