about

We’d rather know than wonder We’d rather see than glimpse We’d like to hold the numbers Right within the palm of our hands We’d like to have the answers We’d rather trust the scan We’d like to see forever Before we commit We want to know their birthdays We’ll take their height and weight We’ll comb through every record As we search their names over and over We want to play with the future We want to shake its hand We want it to spill every last detail About our kid We plucked and pinched, We plumbed the pith, We picked you from a list of thousands We slashed and skimmed, we sit and sipped, We slipped you out amongst the thousands, mmm… We slashed and skimmed, we sit and sipped, We slipped you out amongst the thousands We plucked and pinched, We plumbed the pith, We picked you from a list of thousands We slashed and skimmed, we sit and sipped, We slipped you out amongst the thousands We plucked and pinched, We plumbed the pith, We picked you from a list of thousands, mmm We slashed and skimmed, we sit and sipped, We slipped you out amongst the thousands

lyrics

Know, Wonder considers the ethics of CRISPR/designer babies. The song is inspired by a quote from the author Mary Ruefle, who states that, in contrast to contemporary cultural forces, she would rather “wonder than know.” The song is told from the perspective of two parents-to-be, who would rather “know than wonder,” as they pick out their ideal child from a list of thousands.
